With diabetes and all related troubles, I was excited and looking forward to surgery! I felt as if my life expectancy was limited – I don't feel that way anymore. It was not the easiest thing I've done, but it also was not the hardest. I would do it again in a heartbeat! My 91-year-old mom has been so happy for me. She says I look about two feet taller and younger, too! My sister commented on my bravery and told me she was proud of me at a support group – it made me cry!

I cannot say enough good things about the staff at New Life. They have been so supportive and encouraging along this journey. I have a family history of diabetes and heart disease, and I wanted to prevent that in my own life. I didn't feel good about myself and wanted my self-esteem back. Having surgery was one of the best things I have done for myself. I am much more active than before. I was able to complete my first 5K run/walk, and that was a huge achievement.

I wanted more energy to achieve my goals to be more physically active for my children. Now, I roller skate. I go hiking on trails, discovering more of the southern Illinois I have missed. I feel accomplished. I feel that I am a better role model to my children, showing them better ways of eating and living. I appreciate the New Life staff. They have become more like family. I know they are part of my whole support. I feel blessed for the opportunity.

I knew I needed to change my life in order to see my kids grow up and be the dad I wanted to be. I was nervous before surgery, but I knew I needed to do it. My journey has been long but worth every step of the way. I totally think the surgery saved my life and gave me my life back. I can see my feet again. I am now active again. I play with my kids. I love the outdoors, and I go on hikes and walks. I love life and want to do all I can do. I get compliments, but the main one is that I look healthy and happy – and I feel amazing!
